This project consisted of analyses and design of dam safety improvements for the 395-acre-foot water feature located at the Kauai Lagoons Resort. The water feature was classified by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) as a dam with high hazard potential. Analyses included a hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, a crest elevation analysis, and an embankment vegetation assessment. The analyses required a higher complexity than a typical dam since the impact on resort aesthetics needed to be taken into consideration. Multiple options to improve the dam hydraulics were presented to the owner.
The owner decided to proceed with modifications to the existing outlet structure by adding the sliding gates. Various low spots along the dam crest were identified and raised to provide appropriate amount of freeboard for the dam. Our scope of work also included preparation of an Emergency Action Plan and an Operation and Maintenance Manual.
