This project replaced 2,500 lineal feet of 8-inch and 12-inch water mains along Ward Avenue between Kinau and King Streets and between King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard. In addition to the water mains, other interconnections, fire hydrants, service laterals and meter boxes were replaced to ensure public health and safety in the area.
Bow Engineering performed the civil engineering services. Design included plan and profiles, connection schematics, and traffic control plans. Permitting included NPDES permits for dewatering, hydrotesting, construction storm water runoff, noise variance for night work, and other associated approvals from the city and state.
As part of the our work, we coordinated and obtained approvals from utility companies, government agencies, property owners, parties responsible for maintenance of the roadway, and other involved parties.
The design of this project encountered several challenges one of which was determining an appropriate alignment along this extremely congested utility corridor which was over 100 years old and had very limited record drawings. To handle this challenge, we proposed that the waterline alignment be made above an abandoned sewerline which would be removed.
Construction finished in early 2014.
